I’m sitting down with Senior Alex Poon from Pacific Palisades, CA. He’s an eager volunteer for our first official online Brotherhood Profile.
Tell us about yourself, Alex…
I’m an English major and I’m pursuing minors in writing and political science. I am currently applying to Law School, and I’m a potential Fulbright scholar. I’m also a mid fielder on the lacrosse team as well as a former social chair, risk management chair and eminent recorder of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
What is your favorite aspect about the brotherhood?
The bond that we all share… knowing that we all hold the same principles dear.
Riveting. What do you think you’ve gained from the fraternity and what have you given?
I’ve gotten an amazing brotherhood and a great sense of responsibility, a feel for time management, and the ability to lead. In turn I think I’ve given back three amazing terms as social chair, as well as taking the lead in several SAE philanthropy contributions such as the annual Kappa Karaoke dance contest.
You’re known around town as the Zen Master choreographer of the annual Kappa Karaoke dance contest; With a new group coming in each year, how do you continue to come up with new identities and entertainment?
I think the key to all of it is finding the individual identity of the pledge class. It changes every year and it’s about adapting and about bringing out the best in each class. When you can find what each class does best you want to highlight that. For instance last spring we had a lot of talented dancers that we wanted to spread out over the less talented dancers and make each group look good. Ultimately it proved very rewarding and we had a top 3 finish for the third year in a row.
With challenges on and off the dance floor, what is your guiding motto?
“They said it couldn’t be done.”
Wise words indeed. Shifting gears, do you have any role models?
Eric Greitens… He is a navy seal. I’ve seen him speak multiple times and had the chance to talk with him. He embodies determination and selflessness coupled with a deep knowledge and his responsibility to serve. Another one would have to be Ray Rice because he’s a small guy but he refuses to back down in the face of larger opponents
Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?
I will have hopefully graduated from law school, and be practicing at a large firm in corporate law or alternative dispute resolution.
Now for some random rapidfire… Describe your style.
Casually rakish splashed with conservative rebellion.
Favorite Brands
Brooks Brothers, Gatorade, and Nike
Who is your favorite NBA bench player?
JR Smith… he’s always about the bottom line. I once saw a game where the nuggets were up by 20 but he had 37 points and he kept trying to shoot 3’s just to finish with an even-numbered stat line.
Is there anything else that you’d like our devoted readers to know about you?
Get your hustle on, keep your muscle strong. I know about the blocks you hustle on.
Alex, on behalf of myself and the rest of the staff here at saemobeta.org, we’d like to thank you for your candid demeanor as well as taking the time out of your day to let the readers know a little bit more about the real Mr. Poon.
It’s been a pleasure.
Stay tuned for more interviews with brothers of Missouri Beta as we give you a closer look inside of our chapter.

Intramural Update:
The brothers of the SAE won both their games this week in the intramural sports point league.
The volleyball team won its final regular season game, beating ZBT 25-23, 25-14 to finish off the regular season a perfect 3-0. The setting skills of junior David Williams and the spiking prowess of sophomore Timmy Wang led the way to victory.
The flag football team demolished AEPI 32-6 in the second round of the playoffs. The offense, led by seniors Garrett Schreiber and Alex Wood-Doughy, scored on all but one drive. The defense continued to play well as it has done all season, holding AEPI’s offense to just one score. The team will be playing for the Championship against Phi Delta Theta this Sunday at 1:00pm on the Intramural fields. Looking to avenge an 18-6 loss earlier this season to PhiDelt, the team is on its way to capture its second flag football championship in a row.
The IM athlete of the week is Timmy Wang. Timmy finished with ten kills in the volleyball game and caught two touchdown passes in the football game. It was a fantastic week for Timmy, playing in his first two IM games of the year.

On Saturday, March 5th, the brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon showed their enthusiasm for philanthropy by attending Relay for Life.
Relay for Life is one of the biggest fundraisers for the American Cancer Society, and the Relay at Wash U took place at Francis Field. Over 30 active brothers and new members braved the cold and sold donuts at our booth to raise money for cancer research. Through both team and individual efforts, Sigma Alpha Epsilon raised over $8900- the second most of all fundraising teams at Wash U and more than any other fraternity on campus. This was the best philanthropic fundraising effort in our recent history, and we look forward to topping it next year!

On October 30th, the brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon hosted our annual philanthropy event, Dodging Depression. Dodging Depression is a tournament style competition held annually on the South 40 Swamp that aims to raise awareness of the symptoms and causes of clinical depression. The event was by all means a major success, with participation from 24 teams that competed and helped raise $1,375. This year marked the introduction of several new features for Dodging Depression. In addition to partnering with John Burroughs High School in Ladue, this was the first time that Dodging Depression hosted a lecture by Dr. David Clifford of the Washington University Medical School, who spoke about the various causes and symptoms of Depression. In addition, this was also the first time that Student Health Services’ “Stressbusters” helped out by offering free back rubs to students during the tournament.
The event was made possible by the tremendous efforts of Philanthropy chair Sam Knopf, as well as the time and commitment of the whole brotherhood. Our chapter is pleased to have run one of the most successful philanthropy events in our recent history. Phi Alpha!

On Saturday, October 30th, Sigma Alpha Epsilon will host its annual Dodging Depression dodgeball tournament in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which is the leading national not-for-profit organization, created to understand and prevent suicide through research, education, and advocacy.
This year we have two exciting new additions to the event that should provide participants with the opportunity to better understand mental health issues and how you can help. Thanks to the support of the United Methodist Campus Ministry, Dr. David Clifford of the Wash U. Medical School will be speaking on the symptoms and causes of depression in DUC room 234 from 11:45-12:45, directly before the dodgeball tournament. Also, Student Health Services’ Stressbusters will be giving free massages at the tournament and will provide further information on mental health.
The dodgeball tournament will start at 1pm on the Swamp basketball courts. The entrance fee is $50 for greek teams, and only $30 for freshman and sophomore floors, with all proceeds going towards the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Teams can register by filling out the attached form and placing it in a labeled envelope in our GLO mailbox by Thursday, October 28th. The first 10 teams to sign up will receive FREE T-SHIRTS.
To sign up, please continue to the Dodging Depression page.
